Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is…

A martial art built on leverage.

Helio Gracie modified traditional jiu-jitsu so it worked for his smaller, weaker frame — and kept training until he passed away at 95. That art of leverage is what we teach: real-life self-defense first, then the sport.

Island Jiu-Jitsu began in 2010 as a backyard club and opened its own dojo in 2015 — and it still runs as the same open-door, no-politics ʻohana.

Why Island Jiu-Jitsu

No politics.
No contracts.

We want you to focus on the training, not the politics. Island Jiu-Jitsu started in 2010 as a backyard jiu-jitsu club in Hawaiʻi Kai and still runs on the same idea: No Politics, Gracious Teaching, and Team Unity.

Our story
  • We don’t discriminate

Everyone is welcome — every age, every background, every school and affiliation. Locals and visitors alike.

  • We don’t have contracts

Pay by the class, by the month, or with a punch card. Train because you want to.

  • We don’t require specific gis

Wear what you have. Your first class includes a free gi rental.

  • Our coaches roll with all students

Including the black belt. You’ll learn the details of every position, whatever your rank or experience.

“Our fears don’t stop death. They stop life.”

— Rickson Gracie
